Track date

It’s been a sad morning.  We dropped grandma and grandpa off at the airport early this morning, and L is missing them today.  Goodbyes are hard! But we had a great time playing tourist in Texas.

I managed to squeeze in a few shorter runs, but have one special running highlight from the weekend:

A date at the track.  Even better than a personal date with the track (although I am in need of one of those soon.)

My in-laws happily babysat so we could get out for an evening, and my husband suggested catching the track and field meet at Rice University.  It was a blast! I think the last time I was at a track meet was when I ran in middle school, and in that setting my1:30  was good enough for second place in the 400m. Ha!

This meet was the real deal. Before each new distance, we would try to guess what the best finishing times would be for the men and women.  And they blew us away every time.  It was so inspiring!

(Women moving so fast, they’re just a blur.  Sorry for the poor pictures from my phone).

Here’s an example of their capabilities: the men’s 400 winner came in at 49.38 seconds, the 800 best time was 1:51.07 and the 5k was 14:27.

The women’s 100 dash winner came in at 11.74 seconds, the 400 in 55.56, and the 800 best time was 2:12.

The night before, one of Rice’s women broke the school’s 5k record with 16:03.  She had just broke the 10k record a few weeks earlier with a time of 32:40, which makes her eligible for the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. How cool would it be if she went all the way and I could say I saw her in a college track meet?

It was one of my favorite dates in a long time.

Have you ever gone to a track meet (or participated in one)? Unfortunately, this was the last one of the season, but I can’t wait to go back!

  1. Wow, those are some amazing times! We have not been to an actual track meet, but every year the University of Rhode Island does a youth track meet that the kids get to participate in. My kids love it! When the kids are done the URI team puts on a sample show and I am always inspired. Sounds like it was a great date!

    • That’s so great that the kids can participate in a track at the local university! I’ll have to keep that in mind as L gets older…

  2. I love track meets! LSU in Baton Rouge has an amazing track program and I love to watch the races, relays, etc. I need to get out to see some track events soon before the season ends. Of course, can’t wait to watch the track and field Olympic trials and Olympics this summer, but is is always exciting to see the races in person!

  3. That sounds like so much fun! I never really thought about going to a track meet. My youngest is a great runner so hopefully in the next couple of years, we will be going to his meets. A major budding young running star:)

    • I know, isn’t it? There is some definite talent out there– I know we can work hard and get faster but I also know I will never be running a 16 minute 5k. 🙂

  4. That is a *great* date! My husband and I should do the same at a CU meet. That won’t be the same as Rice, of course (Rice is our alma mater!), but it will still be fun. And CU always gets really fast runners too.

    • I can imagine it would be amazing at CU, too! I wish I could say it was my idea, but he can appreciate any sporting event so it was nice to find something we both enjoyed (I prefer 1-2 baseball games per season, max!)

    • Ha! Yes- she rarely wears them, but she loves them… they were given to us by a neighbor with older kids, I don’t think we would have bought them on our own, but I agree that they’re pretty cute. 🙂

    • Thanks, Robin– yes, you would LOVE it! Hope you find something near you… I didn’t realize we’re nearing the end of the season. We’ll definitely be going back next year!

    • I know- I wish I could say it was my idea… my husband’s not even a runner! But he loves all things sports-related, so it was a good fit for us both.

  5. I love watching track meets. I ATTEMPTED to run in college, but dropped out after a few months, biggest regret to date. That would be fun to predict the times… i might have to do that if Vanderbilt holds a track meet anytime soon 🙂

    • I ran track in middle school and wish I had kept it up through high school… but I doubt I would have lasted through college. I guess now is our time to redeem ourselves? 🙂

    • Thanks, Kathy- it was a really fun weekend. Poor girl was definitely missing them today. I bet your son would love to watch a track meet with you!

    • Thanks, Carrie! Yes- it’s always bittersweet when visits come to an end, we’re ready to get back to normal but I did feel bad for her today. Hopefully she’s back to her cheerful self tomorrow!

  6. So, so cool! I haven’t been to a track meet since I was in one in middle school. In NC visiting the in-laws though, I had speed work on the docket so FIL dropped me off at the UNC track. The track team was working out. Intimidated the heck out of me but it was so cool all the same.

    • Me too! I ran in middle school and haven’t been back since… That’s awesome you got to run while the UNC team was training!

  7. I haven’t been to a track meet since high school! No one was running even close to those speeds at my high school. 🙂

Glad you got a date night while Grandma and Grandpa were in town. That’s one of the best things about having relatives visit!

    • Yes- it was so nice to get out with free babysitters! We’re missing being so far from everyone, but make the most of it when we’re all together.

  8. Wow, I can’t even imagine a 16 minute 5K. I’ve only ever been to an elementary school track meet, which was kinda lame (the kids sometimes run the wrong direction). I’m glad you got to have a fun date night!

    • I know- the crazy thing is the 5k didn’t ‘look’ nearly as fast, until they would go past the clock on each lap and we’d calculate their pace… craziness. But really fun!

  9. My husband and I went on a track date last spring ans saw the twilight meet at the University of Oregon. It is always amazing how FAST collegiate runners are to me as well. I am so excited to finish my marathon on that track Sunday! I guess that’s my next big date on the track 🙂

    • Oh, how fun! It was exciting to realize it was a sporting event that we both enjoyed watching. I’ll be thinking of you this weekend, can’t wait to hear about your race!

    • Yes- high school athletes are really impressive, too! Hope your speed work session went well, I’m planning to get mine in on Thursday.

  10. Hey Laura, I’m so glad I checked out your blog again. I miss running college XC & Track SO much! You would have loved it, too! Now I have to allow myself to be okay with the times/distances/workouts that are now my reality. Somehow, when I compare my college times with what I’m currently able to do, it’s hard to keep perspective on the difference between being a student-athlete and a stay-at-home mom! (My priorities are different now, of course, but it’s worth it!)

    • Thanks for reading, Andrea! I know- it’s definitely different at this stage of life, but it’s nice that we can still have that running identity and do something for ourselves apart from the little ones.

    • I know! It was so inspiring. Many times it didn’t *look* all that fast until they came around the lap and the time on the clock proved that they were blazing by!
