A few weeks ago, I mentioned how intrigued I was with “It Starts with Food” and that I was considering experimenting with it.
I have no idea what I was thinking. At the time, I was craving meat, and I satisfied that craving with our New Year’s Pork and Sauerkraut, roasting a turkey last week, and going out for a burger post-marathon. But since then? Not craving it at all. I’ve been very happy to be back to my beans and whole grains (which are not allowed on the Whole 30 plan).
I’ve been reminded again lately that we are all different, and what works well for one person will not necessarily work for the next. I don’t believe there is one diet that fits all.
I do support paelo’s basic tenets, that getting back to nature is best for our bodies. Paleo defines the most natural foods as meat, vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts and healthy fats. And I have no doubt that this plan can work well for some individuals.
Personally, I don’t do well with a diet that cuts out certain foods or food groups. I would rather choose mostly healthy foods, and have room for fun as well. Like the ice cream I had this evening that didn’t make it into the collage of wiaw eats from the day…
When I let my body lead me, there is nothing very paleo about my eating habits! My body is not interested in giving up whole grains, beans, or yogurt.
Especially as a runner and endurance athlete.
Which is why I was intrigued by the opportunity to read this book:
Is it possible to be an endurance athlete on the Paleo diet?
Should one incorporate any carbs for fuel or recovery?
Paleo for Athletes is well written, well researched and quite thorough in their explanation of what paleo is and is not, and how it can benefit athletes.
My impression before reading this, was that paleo is a better fit for Crossfit atheltes or bodybuilders, but not appropriate for runners or cyclists. The authors successfully convinced me that is not the case.
I was surprised to find that they recommend some simple carbs for the fastest recovery. The book explains the range of eating phases before and after a race or a hard effort, and when to add in some of the carbohydrate foods for optimal performance and recovery.
As I’ve been looking into running coach certifications, I’m thankful to have the opportunity to have read this book and better understand how one might balance the diet with marathon training. It certainly can be done.
It was a perfect balance to the Integrative Nutrition reading I’ve been doing. Can you tell which is which? I certainly resonate more with the latter, but I like simultaneously reading contradictory material.
Who is this book appropriate for?
If you are a paleo-eater or find that your body prefers meat on a daily basis, definitely check it out. Or if you’re curious about paleo in general, it contains a very descriptive, research-based argument for the diet. Honestly, anyone who is intrigued by nutrition or fitness can benefit from this read.
Plus, it has dozens of great recipes in the back.
I was also given two additional copies to giveaway! Use the Rafflecopter to enter…
Have you experimented with paleo? Does your diet change based on your training?

This book interests me because I am currently doing the Whole30 and I have been wondering how this diet will work when lots of running is involved.

Completely AGREE and glad to read this post. You share many of the same thoughts I have. Runners need more calories and have different needs than bodybuilders and Crossfitters (imo). I just wrote about that yesterday, that I don’t like to follow a specific diet and try to eat just a balanced and healthy meals with as much whole food as possible. I agree, we all have to find what works, some folks can’t tolerate dairy or wheat like others, etc, but runners do need more calories, well, marathon runners that is. 5k folks can probably do fine on Paleo type diets?

I would be very interested to read this. I have a few friends that are HUGE Cross fit competitors and stick pretty closely by the diet, but, I agree, it is difficult, and a little crazy to me to give up all of your “carbs”. I also question how one can think beans, something grown from the ground and cooked with nothing more than water, are not pretty natural as well?!
I put up a link to your page on my blog and noted this post and giveaway! If I win, maybe I can meet you to grab it in person!
I think that there is a common HUGE misconception that paleo=low or no carb. It’s really not, it’s just eliminating carbs from grains and processed foods. There are tremendous amounts of carbs in fruits and veggies.
To answer your question about beans, if you read “It Starts With Food” it gives great information of the effects of beans and other legumes on your gut. Actually you can find some compelling info here: http://whole9life.com/2012/09/the-legume-manifesto/
Again, do what works for you~ my body does fine with dairy so I don’t cut out my cheeses or yogurt!

Actually, marathon training and paleo work extremely well together.
I feel adequately informed to say so. I’ve been following a mostly paleo diet for nearly a year and have made tremendous strides in my training. I will try not to get on a soapbox or anything, but it bothers me to see people complaining that they aren’t getting enough food when following a paleo style diet. One of the key things is to NOT count calories and eat until you are full. No one is saying it’s healthy to eat half a cow in one sitting, but if you are mindful about what you eat, including plenty (a LOT) of veggies, some meats and healthy fat- you can really reap some amazing benefits- feeling full and energized not to mention weight loss. That being said, if you’re newly paleo or trying to ease into it, you will likely find yourself craving carbs like mad-lots of folks call that carb flu. You can either give in to it or push through. Whatever eating style works for you is what you should do. Just make choices that make YOUR body as healthy as it can be!!!

Really interested in this book. I am both an endurance athlete and a CeossFit athlete. I am seeing more and more cross over, where many CrossFit athletes are training for halfs, marathons, and even some ultras. I’ve never really thought of endurance running and CrossFit as opposed to each other, just different ways to achieve fitness, so it is interesting to me that there would be such different philosophies in fueling. Anyways, would love to read Paleo for athletes to learn more first hand instead of hearing about it second or third hand, like I have up to this point. I really appreciate the article’s point that everyone is different and not every plan will work for everyone. We must all educate ourselves and find the Bea nutrition plan for our bodies and our goals. Great point. I have to remember that.

I agree that there is no one diet that suits everyone. In fact I’m not a fan of any diet except ones that promote less sugar, healthy protein, healthy fats, and healthy carbs. which isn’t a diet but a way of life. I also believe leaner is healthier.

Would love to read this. I too, hate the restriction of a diet – would rather go back to the basics but I’d be interested in reading more about it.
I’ve got the old edition which is interesting, but I’d love an updated one. I’m not completely Paleo, but I had already gone gluten-free for other reasons, am off almost all dairy, and have other medical dietary restrictions and food sensitivities, so Paleo is pretty close to what I can and do eat – with occasional extra carbs like rice/quinoa preferably in unprocessed form but I’ll say I do still eat a few processed foods. (I eat LOTS of sweet potatoes, btw) I can tell when I need to add cals/carbs, but I’ve been surprised by how well my modified approach has worked with my running. Always tweaking based on the current circumstances and how my body feels though, and what it seems to want.

After reading “Paleoista,” I was convinced to try it to see what all of the hype was about. So far, I haven’t felt any different or seen any changes within my body.
