Labor Day 5k Recap

Hope you’re all enjoying the extra long weekend!

As I mentioned yesterday, I ran the Verona Labor Day 5k this morning.

Ready to run!

I stuck with my plan of not “racing” it for probably the first time ever! The things that helped were 1) the heat, 2) the humidity, and 3) the hills.

The race didn’t begin until 9:30 and we were so sweaty just waiting to start.  I was dripping wet after a 2 mile warm up. It felt like I was back in Houston again!

I ran into a friend from the running group I’ve joined recently, and she prepped me for the course.  Most of the first hill was uphill, with some steep portions.  That also confirmed for me that this course was not worth the pr effort.

I’m not even sure if the race had a chip time, as we never did cross a start line.

We took off and almost immediately began to climb.  I paced myself to get up that monster, but felt pretty strong.  Spin classes and running hills this last month have definitely helped!

Not surprisingly, my first mile was pretty far from a typical 5k pace- 7:14.

The second mile leveled out a bit and I helped pace my friend to her goal time. Mile 2- 6:40

By the third mile, I was itching to go, and decided to pick it up just a little.  I still felt good and was thrilled to be enjoying the race, rather than wanting to die like most 5k efforts. Third mile- 6:22.

Final stretch to the finish!

I came in just under 21 minutes.  I added a few more miles on afterwards for a solid tempo run, 7.5 total miles for the day.

I still managed to place first in my age group so I stuck around.  The awards were a bit crazy- you had to shuffle your way to the front of the table, rather than having winners announced. But first you had to shuffle your way to the front of the results listings.

But it turned out to be worth it- I came away with a $25 gift card to the local running store and a glass.  I’ll gladly take that over another medal!

After some good food and a shower, my daughter and I drove the 3 hours to PA to spend a few days with my family this week.  I’m excited to catch up with some good friends, too.

How was your long weekend? Did you race on Labor day?

  1. But you are still so speedy!!! I enjoy running some races just for the sake of running them but have to admit some times when I am feeling really good I will be disappointed that I didn’t go out to PR from the start!

I am hoping this humidity goes away soon, it is a killer! I am so ready for fall…

  2. That is an awesome race especially considering you weren’t pushing it and such hot weather!!! Way to go! I would LOVE to win $20 to a running store! Awesome prize! I did a tempo today and was happy with it and that I did it. I almost didn’t because I am still a bit tired from my 18 miles on Friday. I think I would have in previous training just made it an easy one but I am glad I pushed it

  3. It’s so frustrating when races start that late during summer-I just don’t understand that! Glad you had a good race. Love your running outfit! Have a good visit with your family. I flew home to Louisiana to visit mine for a couple of days. Too much good food 🙂

  4. Sometimes it’s fun to just run and not race, isn’t it? Nice job conquering those hills and sulk managing to place first in your AG. You’re amazing! Enjoy your time with family!

  5. Great job on the race – glad you had a fun race!!!
Gotta say all the people you had to shuffle through look a little on the cranky side – must be the extreme humidity!!!
And, I love that tank you have on!!!!

  6. Awesome “non-race” “race”, love seeing those killer negative splits too!

I raced a half, but it was yesterday and not today (labor day!) Super hot and humid in Virginia beach- good to know I have more humidity waiting for me when I got back up north to NY!

  7. Awesome race! And great picture of the runners trying to see their results – I’ve been one of them so many times!
I ran a 5K on Labor Day and got a PR and 3rd in my age division, which was a first! I’ve never placed before. The humidity was unreal but I’m so glad I did it!

  8. I didn’t know you’re from Verona. I live in south orange. Do you ever do the new stead 5k in south orange. I hope to do it. I’ve been sick for more then two weeks and was planning to before that. It’s on the 21st. I haven’t worked out in over 2 weeks so I’m worried.
