I got in!

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend? Mine was filled with lots of pool time, teaching spin, a birthday party and naps.  We missed strawberry picking but are going to try to get blueberries later this week instead.  I’m trying to squeeze in my favorite summer activities this month before our lives are changed with a newborn!

I also got some good news last week, which you may have already seen on Instagram

Houston marathon acceptance

I got in!

I’m not sure if I should be elated or terrified, or maybe a bit of both.  I usually would not recommend that a running client run a full marathon just six months postpartum.  I know I will need to be extra cautious to listen to my body and build up very slowly and carefully.

I won’t be setting any crazy goals and I really doubt I’ll hit the 50-60 miles that I was running in the training cycle last fall.

However, I’m excited to have a goal to train for and the timing is really perfect.  A January race gives me more time to bounce back and train than the east coast fall marathons.  And I know I would be miserable trying to get out of bed for long runs in the winter time if I were training for a spring marathon.

January is a happy medium. Plus I can meet up with many of the friends that we left there!

I also finalized my fall half:

I’ve never run this race, but it’s in driving distance and fits the timeline I was looking for.  Plus, there’s a kids run for L.

I’ll talk more about my training plan as it gets closer.  For now, I’m going to continue to run if it feels good, but taper off for “labor” day.  Just a few more weeks to go!

    • Thanks, Janelle… that or a bit crazy. :) We’ll see how it all comes together. I wanted to run the Philly Rock and Roll too but it’s definitely too soon!

    • Yes- we’ll have to decide if we’ll all go, or how that’s going to work out, but I’m excited. I was ready to run “for fun” after the fall training too…. and now that I’ve had 8 months of it, a race is appealing again! Hope I still think so halfway through the training!

    • Good question! It will be a combo of early mornings, gym workouts with child care, and mid morning at home workouts when baby naps and L is at preschool… we’ll see!!

  1. Woohoo! That’s awesome and I have a feeling you will surprise yourself, especially since you are still running this late in the game. My friends and I have talked our friend who is due July 11 into running the Napa marathon on March 1, and she is a bit terrified as well! You both will be fine!

    • I’m glad I have your support. :) Some days I feel confident about it, others I hope I’m not being stupid. But I think as long as I don’t expect my training to look like last fall, I should be okay with fewer miles and less speed work. We’ll see!

  2. I did the Trenton Half a few years ago. It was the first year they did the race and there were some logistic issues, but overall it was great. And it is still my PR course (though I am convinced it was a short course) so it holds a special place in my heart. And I trained for a Feb marathon in TX while living on the east coast and it was the best decision I ever made. I only had one long, cold run. The rest were enjoyable!

  4. haha! I like how you are going to taper off for “labor” day! My oldest was born on Labor day weekend.

    I am training for a half in October. I don’t know what I’ll do after that. I just need to finish this goal first. :)

  5. Congrats on getting in! I know you had a really fast marathon time when you ran it before and I hope this next time is just as fast. I recently learned about a blueberry picking farm in Conroe, north of Houston. Have fun picking!

  6. Congrats!!! I’m impressed with your ability to plan! Since I’ll be in my 3rd trimester starting in the fall I don’t think I’ll be running any races but I plan to work on speed, 5ks and 10ks after baby#2 arrives in December. Excited to see if you have a boy or girl and watch you train postpartum, you are always an inspiration for me :)
