April Recap

Last year, I did a recap of every month and how well I was meeting my goals.  I’ve been less consistent this year, but plan to write recaps every few months.  Here’s a review of my original goals:

Running-blogging related

Break a few more records:

  • Marathon: sub- 3:40 on January 13 –> Done at the Houston Marathon
  • Half Marathon: sub-1:39:xx —> Done at the Sugarland Half
  • 10k: 43:xx –> Need to plan another race
  • 5k: 19:xx —> Current goal for Saturday!

Stay injury free: maintaining 2-3 days of spinning and weights, and increasing my miles conservatively —So far so good

Conference/Bloggers meet-up:  Attend another fitness or blogging related conference (Fitbloggin, Blend, etc) –Heading to Blend in 2 weeks!!

Become a certified running coach: Compare/contrast courses and sign up for a local course in the next 6 months  —Took the course in January and already began coaching clients!

Nutrition School

Experiment with the dietary theories I’m learning (raw, macrobiotic, superfoods, juicing, etc):  spend 1-2 weeks per month on each theory —Experimenting with several, currently about to cut out gluten for a few weeks

Decrease my sugar to a small piece of dark chocolate daily (repeat goal from last year!) — Sugar Detox challenges have helped with this!

Decrease my refined carbs to one serving or less dailyAgain, the sugar detox/processed food challenge helped here!

Write my Health Coach intentions, goals, and timeline for starting a coaching business–Done

Take on 3-4 clients before graduating in October– Have 2 currently, with 2 more to begin soon

Personal & Family Balance

Build in quiet time: just a few minutes a day to journal, pray, meditate or sit silently…  Still need to work on this, but it’s better than 2012

Have set times for the computer: limit my blogging writing/reading and other computer time to early morning, L’s nap/school time and an hour or two after her bedtime — Feeling better about this- I realize I can’t do it all and I’m okay with it.

Read at least one book per month:Lots of nutrition reads, if that counts.

Date nights:  Once/month is our goal– Yep! Several date nights during our trip last week.  :)

Make sure my family knows they are my first priority: daily hugs, words of affirmation, monthly notes of appreciation to my husband– I’ve made an effort to be more present with less multi-tasking, although I haven’t been doing the notes of affirmation for hubs

  1. Great idea on the goals (and review) – you are busy! Looks like you are doing a great job on achieving your goals. The balance thing is a constant struggle!!

    • I love that idea- focusing on a mini goal at a time is so doable. That’s largely how I run my health coaching practice as well, you have to start somewhere- the big picture can be too overwhelming!

    • I will! I was thinking of you… we were encouraged to give it up for 3 weeks to test it for ourselves and/or have empathy for clients who need to give it up.

  2. Laura!! This is amazing. You’ve done such a great job working on your goals. Watching you gain so much confidence and speed in your racing is awesome. The being more present goals are the ones that I’m trying hard to focus on. It’s far from perfect but definitely better than last year.

    • Yes- I talked more about being present in tomorrow’s post, (and linked to your awesome post about it). And thanks, friend! So excited to see you again in two weeks!

  3. You are doing much better on your goals than I am. I was just working on my goal update post for tomorrow. Yikes. Marathon training has consumed every once of my spare time. I can’t wait to hear about your 5K this weekend. I think you will be able to cross that goal off of your list too!

    • Oh yes, marathon training is all-consuming. As much as I’m itching to start training for a fall marathon, I am definitely loving the extra time I have right now!

    • Yes- it’s so nice to step away from the computer and not worry about it. It means I leave some things undone that I’d like to do (especially extra blog reading, responding to comments) but I’m learning to accept that.

  4. Yowzers…. so great to see you reaching your goals. That picture of the 3 of you is beautiful – so sweet.

I appreciate all the time and energy you put into your blog and for the community around it!

  5. You’ve done so much this year! Good luck on your crazy fast 5-K goal time this weekend! Thus far, I haven’t seen you set a race goal that you haven’t reached, so I’m thinking you’ll definitely get that sub-20!

    • Haha, thank you Beth! There are days where I feel like I’m losing my mind, and days where it falls into place. I’m learning to ride the roller coaster. :)

  6. I love all your goals, you are clearly someone who is inspiring and always working on bettering yourself which is amazing. You’re an awesome role model.

I keep track of my goals by writing them down, I was doing monthly recaps but have been not doing them the last few months. I needed to keep track of these on a personal level to help MYSELF more. Once I feel more up to par on my own terms I can start recapping more.

  7. I’m glad you are reaching your goals and I really hope you get that sub 20 minute 5k this weekend. You deserve that one. I’m really trying to be more consistent with my 5k times. They are always all over the place.

  8. I love that you also have to set limits on yourself for how much time you can spend on the computer blogging and reading other blogs. This is something I struggle with. I don’t want to blogging to become an idol (which it so easily can), but I also want to get my blog out there more. At times it almost feels like you have to constantly be on the computer to get your blog noticed, but I know that is not true.

    • I hear ya, Becky! It is hard.. I still feel guilty sometimes when I can’t give it as much time as I’d like, but I’ve learned to be better at stopping when my time is up and leaving it at that.

  9. You are doing an awesome job with your goals – well done.
Are you going to Fitbloggin – I will be there – it is my first time going and I am super excited :)

    • Thank you, Sarah. And no- sadly, I’m not going this year. I knew we would be moving around that time and didn’t want to risk it, so I’m doing BLEND instead. You’ll have such an amazing time!

    • Thank you, Lisa! I hope it’s inspiring and not superwoman in an unachievable way.. more on that tomorrow. But- YES!! I would LOVE to run with you- can’t think of a better way to hang out. :)

  11. You’re doing so well with all your goals. Now that the weather is finally nice here, I’ve been backing off my computer time, too, so that I can spend more time outdoors with the kids – definitely a higher priority!!!
