A day in Life

Hey friends,

Did you have Monday off? Our weekend was packed with L’s 5 year old birthday party, visits with friends, play dates and errands.  In the middle somewhere I was also prepping for a mindful eating workshop that I led at our local Fleet Feet Monday evening.  It was a packed house and so much fun!

Did I mention that I think we have a teething baby? We’ve had a few rough nights in a row with 1-2 hours of baby insomnia around 2am.  Lots of fun.  Needless to say, I started this week feeling a bit behind and exhausted.

Thank goodness the half is this Sunday.  I’ve had zero time for workouts so I’ve been cutting them short and (gasp) even skipping a few.  It is so unlike me! But my husband also left for a 3 day trip so the combination of solo parenting and juggling every thing else with work and home left me with zero energy.

I thought I’d play along with a day in the life link up and wiaw, so here’s a glance at yesterday:

2 am- Feed the baby and put her back down.  Try to fall back to sleep but hear her babbling away off and on for another hour.  At 3 am, I nudged my husband to check on her.  She finally gets quiet and we fall back to sleep.

6:30 am- Like clockwork, our 4yo is up. My husband gets up with her and I lay and savor the peace and quiet for a few extra minutes. I typically squeeze my workout in here but I was exhausted and decided to take an unplanned rest day.

7 am- The baby is up and I feed her and join everyone for breakfast.

8 am- We’re packing lunch, getting everyone changed and dressed, and loading up the car for preschool drop off. I also dropped my husband off for his trip.

9 am- I play with baby J a few more minutes before putting her down for her nap.

9:30- 11am – I make tea and then sit down to check in with the reset group, reply to emails, start an article and work on other unfinished projects until the baby is up.

11 am – Feed baby J and start to get lunch ready for myself.  I often use this time to get groceries or run errands or we play at home.  She now loves to practice sitting up and grabbing for toys.

1 pm- I put the baby down for a nap and try to reply to a few emails, clean up the kitchen and throw a load of laundry in. I snack on almonds and dried fruit and make a protein smoothie (I blended a banana, Vega pp and almond milk).


Vega sent me their newest Vega One chocolate protein powder and it hit the spot. Their new version has double the greens and 3x as much (plant based) protein.  Plus more organic ingredients and it’s non-GMO verified.  They offered a tub as one of the prizes for the 5 by the 5th challenge, so you may get to try some, too.

1:45 pm- The baby is up and I change her and we hop in the car to pick up big sister by 2pm. I fed her after we got home.

2:15 pm- Because L’s party was this weekend, she has been so easy to occupy the last few days.  We spent an hour or two on a butterfly mosaic, fuse beads, and Melissa & Doug dress up sticker dolls.  Baby J was happy to grab and chew on anything we put in front of her, and spent some time jumping.

4:00 pm- I put baby down for her final catnap. L watched a short show and I started prepping dinner.

4:30 pm- Baby was up.  I changed her again and fed her one side and then offered her a tbsp of avocado which she happily gobbled up!

5:15 pm- We had a “use up the leftovers in the fridge” kind of meal and I topped greens, beets, and sweet potato with avocado tuna salad, sunflower seeds, kalamata olives and feta.  L had a piece of ham, leftover potato and peas.  We both ate a few banana pancakes as well (banana and egg) and I had a grapefruit.

6 pm- I let the sisters giggle and entertain each other on the living room floor and race through kitchen clean up as quickly as possible.

6:30- 7 pm- We run through our bedtime routine.  I feed the baby one last time and put her down by 6:45.  I read L a few stories, make up one last story and kiss her goodnight by 7 pm.

7 pm- I quickly tidy up the house and do some final prep for a client session.

7:30 pm- Meet with a local health coach client in my office.

8:30 pm- Say goodbye to her, snack on carrots and hummus, an apple, and leftover Sangria my husband made for the birthday party, reply to emails, finish this blog post and check the weather for Saturday’s half (which now says 100% chance of rain- gah!)

10:00 pm- Crash!

  1. I am feeling so sleep deprived, our baby has been waking up a lot! And her sisters have been hard to put to bed because it is so hot, they sleep in and then baby is up with the sun. Ah well they are all so sweet. Definitely struggling with exercise, I am just so tired when I finally have all 3 in bed.

I need to get better at the “use up the leftovers in the fridge” trick… when my MIL was here in December, not only did she cook a ton of meals, she was the queen of making lunch from leftovers…she would reinvent last night’s dinner into a new meal for lunch. It certainly was needed the way she cooked up a storm every night.

    Alas, I do not have any good tricks for a teething baby who is up at night. My son is almost 4 and I can’t remember if we were up thanks to teething…I’m sure we were, but I’ve erased those horrible memories! And if I don’t work out first thing in the day, it is almost 99% likely it won’t happen that day.

  3. Oh I remember all those short little naps! It makes it hard to get out of the house. I’m impressed with how much work you are able to find time for while taking care of your girls and managing everything at home! I hope J starts sleeping through the night again soon 🙂

  4. Oh, good to know on the new Vega! I need to check that out. Glad you mentioned it. And sometimes the use up everything in the fridge meals turn out to be some of the best. You just reminded me to use beets 😉 And I always feel like an old lady – I typically go up to bed at 8 and read for about an hour.

  5. I’d say you have more than earned the right to skip a workout or two! Sometimes rest and sanity need to prevail. It’s nice, though, when a taper corresponds with a busy schedule, isn’t it?

  6. I have so much empathy with regard to being so exhausted. I remember when my children were young (Three in diapers) and my husband was deployed overseas. I thought I might loose my mind. You have a lot on your plate and not just healthy food! Sometimes I wish I could live closer to some of my blog friends so that I could do something more. You always have the best attitude. Giving you a big hug this morning.

  7. I would crash at 10:00 PM too…goodness gracious that is quite the day, but your EATS look delicious for being such a busy bee…I try to get into bed at 10:00 PM and read for 30-45 minutes to unwind and hopefully be exhausted by that point. 🙂

  8. It’s funny how much our days are similar! Your salad looks so good!

    I am usually in bed my 9:30 most nights, since I have to get up so early to train. As for teething, we are going through the same thing. I just bought an amber necklace to see if that helps. I didn’t use one with Keenan, but I’m willing to try anything at this point!

  9. You stay up late! I actually try to go to bed around 9 most nights, beut it sometimes ends up being closer to 10. However, if it’s 10, I am pretty tired the next day, as I get up at 4 every morning.

    Skipping a workout is usually just laziness on my part. The other day I had a run planned after work and I had to stay a few hours late at work and so I skipped it…I will make up for it on the weekend though! (that doesn’t keep me from feeling guilty about it however)

  10. I love all these day in the life posts! So fun to read. I get up at 5 am every day for a little bit of blog work and a run. And I’m exhausted by 8:30pm when my hubs and I usually head to bed. As for teething. Highland teething tabs and if it’s really bad baby Orajel and lots of coffee for mama.
