A day in life + WIAW

Yesterday began as it usually does, with our 4 year old waking us around 6:20am.  I was exhausted from a busy Monday and opted to push off my short run until later in the day.  My husband got up with L and I fell back to sleep for another hour.  I can’t remember the last time I slept past 7am.  Bliss!

I came down and ate pumpkin quinoa with Greek yogurt and then woke baby J up around 8am.  She’s always the last one up!

After feeding the baby and packing L’s lunch, there was a little sister squashing love before we headed out the door to drop her off at preschool.

Back at home, baby J took a two hour nap and I put together a workshop I’m giving at a local running store in two weeks.

The baby woke up around 11am so I fed her and we went on a short walk around the block before lunch. It was the first time she faced out in the Moby wrap and she loved it.

Weekend leftovers: Chana Masala, Sauteed kale, quinoa and grilled tempeh

She can only handle about an hour of awake time so she soon went back down and I got to join my husband for lunch and hear his feedback on an e-book draft I’m putting together.  While it’s nothing like the research and articles he publishes, I always appreciate his perspective.

By 1:00pm baby J was up and ready to eat again, so I fed her and then left her with daddy while I headed out to pick up L.  We stopped by my gym to cancel the membership for now- we recently added a treadmill and spin bike to our “home gym” so I don’t see myself using it this year.

3pm- L and I returned home and had pumpkin almond meal muffins for a snack (with almond butter on mine.)  The baby was on nap #3 and L wanted to watch a show, so I put on “Super Why” at her request and hopped on the treadmill to get in my four easy miles.

We finished about the same time and she started an art project (name tags for her friends at school.)  While she was occupied, I started prepping dinner.

Around 4:30 my husband headed out for a short run (I love that he’s running these days!) and I threw dinner in the oven.  I asked L to go check on the baby… she’d been sleeping for 2.5 hours and I was ready to get her up.  (In L’s mind, “check on” baby J means “wake her” so I knew that would be the case.)

I started feeding baby J again just as daddy walked in the door.  He finished up dinner and we sat down to eat and listened to random stories from preschool.  Baby J watched us from her infant seat and drooled and chewed on her hands.

After dinner, we put on music to occupy L while we cleaned up the kitchen.  She loves the Pandora Disney channel and will entertain herself for hours dancing and singing along.  Baby J is happy to watch.

By 6:30, both girls were getting cranky so we all headed upstairs to start the bedtime routine.  Baths, stories, and snuggles.  I fed the baby one last time and she was out by 7pm.  L went down about ten minutes later.

And now here I am- getting this post together before I finally shower and call it a night! Oh and for WIAW I should note that there was an unpictured banana with nut butter mid-morning, a bowl of popcorn + apple + dark chocolate after lunch, and a date-nut bar + apple after dinner.  Someday when I’m not breastfeeding my appetite will return to normal!

How late is “sleeping in” for you?

Do you have a gym membership, or do you have at-home workout options?

    • I am loving having him around! He’s back to teaching courses next semester but will still do his research from home 2-3 days a week. It’s made the transition to life with two kids so much easier!

    • I love to see what she picks out every day- it keeps us laughing!! And you are so much more of a morning person than I am. I often think of you when I’m setting my alarm for a run!

  1. Sleeping past 7 is absolute bliss!!! I usually get either Sat or Sun to do that, and I love every precious minute.
Great pictures and so much yummy goodness. Now I’m hungry… 🙂

  2. That is so nice! For me, I “sleep in” until around 6:30. 7am, I wouldn’t even know who I was anymore! I always enjoy reading about your day, it seems so interesting and fun. Baby J looks cute as always!

  3. I love how our community is always up this early. I can’t sleep beyond about 6:30 either hahaha! I definitely understand you wanting to ask for the hubby opinion. I am always asking Steve what he thinks about things like that, and he reads my blog posts before I submit them to make sure they are okay! Thanks for sharing Laura, pumpkin quinoa and greek yogurt, gooood idea!

  4. Did I read e-book? Ek! How exciting. Can’t wait to hear more about it. I usually wake up anywhere between 330-430 these days to get my husbands breakfast, and & lunch prepared. I also eat my breakfast around 5:00, and fall back asleep around 6:30 for 2 hours or so.

    • Thanks, Jessie! It’s a project I’ve been wanting to do for months and I’m finally forcing myself to carve out some time for it. 🙂 I’m so impressed that you get up that early- you’re a better wife than me! He’s a lucky guy. Glad you can go back to sleep, too.

  5. Our town has a Parks/Recs fee that covers the parks upkeep and a gym-like facility. The annual cost is minimal and the facilities are solid. Nothing huge, but efficient.

Sleeping in today is 0445. Time for a swim in just a bit.

  6. Laura,
How are you getting her to sleep so long?! Sutton cries for about 10-25 minutes before falling asleep only for 30-45 minutes in her crib. HELP!
Babywise, 12 Hours of Sleep By 12 Weeks… I’m trying it all! I guess we are only 10 weeks old but Gentry and her naps are not syncing and I can’t get any work (or me time) done! Haha…

    • Yesterday was definitely more sleep than usual for her. Most days she does one 2 hour nap in the morning, and then 2 or 3 45 minute naps in the afternoon. But to answer your question, I have no idea. This girl needs so much more sleep than L ever did!
Your mom is right- hang in there. L did the 30 minute naps for months when she was a baby and it was SO hard for me!! As soon as I sat down she was up again! But they finally stretched out and got longer. Babywise never worked for her either… some kids have their own rhythm and at 4, her creativity is definitely a good thing!

  7. The gym I had been going to for over 8 years closed about 3 years ago now so that left me gym-less. I started putting more into they weights I had at home and converted a spare bedroom into my weight room. It’s small, but it works. I also have a bike trainer so I can “ride” my bike up there during bad weather or colder months. As much as I don’t like the ‘mill, I wish I had room for one.

    • I was a little nervous about getting a treadmill, just wondering if I’d really use it. But it has already come in handy so many times, especially as I have to run around a baby’s feeding schedule and I often start on there until she’s up, then feed her and finish. Glad I have it for this stage of life!

  8. Sleeping in is 7 to 730! love it when I need that rest! Sounds like baby is so good for you, love that she’s the last one up!

    • She needs a lot more sleep than L did at this age, it definitely makes juggling two a lot easier! She’s still getting up to eat at night but I’ll take it if it means these long, lazy mornings. 🙂

  9. Sleeping in is 7:00 around here, and it feels amazing compared to 5am 🙂

We have a gym membership because we won 1 year for free. I’m going to be sad when it’s up. We’ll have to see if it will fit in the budget. I do think that my husband’s new employer will help pay for one though, so we might be able to swing it! The kid’s care is what makes it REALLY nice to have

  10. The latest I can sleep in these days is 7am and usually even that doesn’t happen! I have a gym membership but I never go. I will probably use it more when Im not training and in the winter months. My goal is at some point to have a basic enough home gym that I won’t need a gym membership! I would miss body pump classes but its just been too expensive to pay every month and rarely use it!

  11. The cheeks on baby J- on my goodness, yummy! And L cracks me up because she looks just like my daughter in a mixed of patterns- florals, stripes, you name it! Your days sounds similar to mine when I am not running out for errands. Goes by so fast!

  12. I LOVE L’s stylin’ outfit. And I love this: “Baby J watched us from her infant seat and drooled and chewed on her hands.” 🙂 I can revisit my daughter’s childhood through your stories. Back then I made it a point to get up before she did, so I’m now well-habituated to rising early. 7am would def be sleeping in for me!

I don’t bother with a gym membership anymore, because I’d rather spend the money on massage! Once in a while I’ll buy a day pass to use the pool. At home, we’ve got the treadmill, and quite a collection of mats, balls, dumbbells, bands, etc.

    • PS: RE Disney music – I’m a big fan of Disney musicals, and heartily recommend the 15-min soundtrack to Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade! It was in my treadmill running mix today. 😉 I excuse it as part of my prep for Disney in January, but the reality is that I’d play it anyway, lol.

  13. Sleeping in? What is that? 😉

On the weekends we sleep in until 7:30, 8 if we are lucky – though that would mean both girls are in bed with us. Week days we are up anywhere between 6 and 6:30am.

No gym membership here, though I would love to be able to go to one. I run at night on the treadmill while the girls sleep or dvd/other workouts.

  14. Ahh I love tofu – and every time I see it I crave it! I guess sleeping in is 8-9am – and that’s only if I’ve had a super late/indulgent night before! I get thrown off if I sleep in past 7 most days.

  15. Sleeping in is anything past 7am (we’ll see what happens when Daylights Saving Time kicks in this weekend and the toddler starts adjusting!).

I’m not a big fan of gyms, but I have joined off and on over the last decade. Right now, it’s no gym, but once baby #2 arrives, I will probably join so that I can take advantage of on-site babysitting while I try and get some exercise in!

  16. Your day seems so smooth! I am very impressed! I did not have a “napper” at all … my daughter only “cat-napped” and was rarely out for long. And she did not sleep in 😉 Enjoy these years … they are the sweet and innocent ones. I’m so glad for you that you are able to keep up with your own fitness. I began working out when my daughter was a year and a half. I don’t know if I could have managed to get to it before that age of hers.

    • Hey Christina! My older daughter only catnapped too- it was so challenging! I felt like I never had a moment to myself. This time I lucked out with a baby that needs more sleep, thank goodness. I don’t think I could have done that all over again!

    • Hey Katie! I linked to the recipe above- it’s a little weird, but good! I know- I used to love the extra hour but with young kids, it just means our whole schedule is thrown off for a week or two.
