Thanks to everyone who is participating in the 5 by the 5th series… your enthusiasm is contagious, and I love hearing your stories and goals. There were some great photos and stories shared on the Mommy, Run Fast Facebook page! If you wrote a post outlining your January 5k or 5 miler, you are welcome to link it up below so we can read and support each other.
I’m using this series as motivation to work on my 5k time, but my first 5k fell right in the middle of marathon tapering, so I used it for some tempo miles last week. It was a windy day, and felt a lot harder than it should have. My January 5k time was 22:45. I’m hoping to break 20 minutes by June, which is 20 seconds under my current pr. I’ll probably have to sign up for a local 5k to really push myself to break that time.

This month’s prize is a pack from Harbinger Fitness: they generously sent me a yoga mat and balance ball to try, and agreed to send out two prize packs to you.

The balance trainer was new to me, but is a great tool for cross training and balance. It is especially helpful for developing core strength, and can be used for squats, one leg balance work, bridges, planks or mountain climbers. The possibilities are endless.
The yoga mat is great quality. It’s thick, soft, and rolls up with a wrap for easy transport. My daughter and I like to roll it out for some mommy and me yoga time. It’s also perfect for pilates, core work or stretching.
Harbinger has all sorts of strength training fitness products. You can find more about them and their products on their website.
In the theme of yoga, Earth Yoga offered a top or bottom to one winner as well. I reviewed their clothing a few months ago and loved the soft fabric, earth friendly material, and cute styles. I’m actually wearing an outfit from them in the photo above.
Do you practice yoga? Even a few minutes a week can help benefit your running.
Later this week, I’ll share a guest post with tips for incorporating yoga, the benefits of yoga, and the best poses for runners.
This month’s winners are:
Balance Trainer/Yoga mat—> April O.
Balance Trainer/Yoga mat—-> Keri R.
Earth Yoga top or bottom—-> Carrie (@CarrieSinCA)
Also, the winner of the $100 HHGregg gift card is——-> Jen G (@jengov)
Congrats, winners!! Email me with your address so it can be sent out.

I’m a fan of yoga, but I don’t do it nearly as much as I should. I’m also a fan of Harbinger. They’re great.

Yay that I won the yoga prize! Because I do love yoga. Although my favorite yoga teacher isn’t teaching my usual class anymore and so I’ve kind of lost my mojo for going.

My goal is to break 20 min in a 5K this year too, guess that means I need to actually sign up for a few! Good luck

I was thinking the same thing… I know I won’t break it on my own, need a race to push myself!

Yoga has been a great addition to my workout routine. Years ago, I didn’t like it at all. Now I look forward to my weekly class, and incorporate a few minutes of it on my own almost every day. I can’t imagine it not being a part of my life anymore!

I’m still not very good at incorporating it, but I’m working on it!

Thanks for the motivation Laura:) I have done hot yoga before, but I can’t seem to quiet my mind enough to do it without the heat. Great workout for runners for sure!

Girl, you can TOTALLY shave off 2 min off your 5k time by June! I bet you do it waaaay before that! And then tell me about it while I sit here dreaming about running with my injured foot.

I’ll be marathon training for most of the series, so I doubt my 5K times will look very impressive–but I certainly hope to improve on this month’s! Thanks for hosting the series!

Congrats to the winners! I raced on time, but totally missed the deadline for the stats…learned something, though! ha.
This will be a great tool for keeping the speed sharp when I am NOT 5k training. Thanks for hostessing! Great prizes!! Lots of good “Races” happened this month!

Had to comment on the downdog pic- so adorable!
I’m soooo jealous of your time. My fastest was 26 abd seconds. Which I’m super proud of. However since the colder weather I’ve slowed down. Idk why. But I’m trying not to focus so much on my time. It stressed me out the last time I did. Congrats winners!
Yes, it’s good not to over-focus on time. And I never used to be fast… I think running the longer distances really helped me chop time off my short distances, and then I added speed work which helped even more. So now I’m intent on seeing what my potential is… but I really admire those who can run for the sake of running and let go of the focus on pace!
