Many bloggers are taking the day to honor and remember Friday’s victims. This post was written in advance, but Iwill join them today in taking extra time to remember, to pray, to hold my daughter closer, to unplug, and to be grateful for what I have.
I wrote a bit yesterday about Friday’s awful tragedy and a few ways to help. I also have to share this article, “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”… powerful, heartfelt (and disconcerting) words from an honest mother. As a school social worker, I’ve worked with children like her son and I hope her message spreads so we can talk about raising awareness of mental health issues among our children and implement change.

Hi everyone! Today is extra special because I am the featured blogger this morning at the SITS girls!

If you are unfamiliar with the SITS girls, head over and check them out. They are a community of women bloggers, and have a wealth of information on social media and blogging tips. I’ve learned a lot from their articles, and recommend them highly.
If you’re stopping by from SITS, welcome!
I share fitness and nutrition info with an emphasis on running (currently training for the Houston marathon on January 13), training tips and resources, and healthy recipes, including some toddler ideas. I’m studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and am fascinated with the healing power of food.
Some recent posts include: 13 homemade edible gift ideas, my Whole Wheat Gingerbread cookie recipe and my TriGirl half marathon recap.
I also host a menu planning link up on Sundays with Jill from Fitness, Health and Happiness. We would love to have you link up your menu plan anytime!
In January, I’m kicking off a 5k or 5 mile Virtual Race Series. From January to June, participants will run or walk either a 5k (3.1 mile) or 5 mile run by the 5th of the month. Bloggers have the option of blogging about their run, and/or can link up a few days later to share with each other.
The race series is free and there will be prizes given out randomly each month. If you’d like to join us, check out the original announcement to register. Here’s the race bib:
For those of you who are already signed up, I have a few updates and announcements.
5 by the 5th Updates:
Medals
Participants who would like a medal will have the option to purchase one at cost (approximately $5) toward the end of the series.
Hashtag
Use the hashtag #5bythe5th on Twitter or Instagram when chatting about the virtual runs
Recording Results
I will be emailing all participants this week with detail on where and how to record your results each month.
Tips and Coaching
I asked several running coaches and seasoned runners to share their best tips for beginners or experienced runners. Each month, I’ll share some of the tips. Some of the topics include:
- How to train for a 5k
- How yoga can benefit your running
- Tips for using a foam roller
- Proper fueling before and after a run
- A few “How I Train for a 5k” stories from some speedy ladies I admire
I’m open to other topic suggestions of things that would be of interest to you as well.
For starters, here’s my friend Tia’s words of wisdom on getting started with 5ks as a distance runner.
What other topics would you want to see covered? What questions do you have for running coaches?

FYI, the candy stuffed PB cookie bars in your recent post came out great! I love the 5K distance and I always add an extra 0.1 to my 3 mile training runs, so I’m really excited to take on 5 by the 5th!

I want to be a runner so badly. In my mind I totally am, but in reality I am far more couch potato!

The couch to 5k program is a great one to get started… but I also know running isn’t for everyone. Find what you enjoy and stick to that!

Happy SITS Day!
I hope it is a great day for you. I cannot run for exercise due to some back issues and my Fibro, but I do love to walk. There’s nothing better than fresh air when you’re feeling a bit down or need a break from it all.

Congrats on being a featured blogger! I commented on the roll call that hopefully you could inspire me to get back to running, and then when I come to your site I saw your challenge and promptly registered! My husband is starting vacation tomorrow for three weeks so I’ll take advantage of the extra parent to get out on my own and get ready! My goal has always been just a 5K (distance doesn’t excite me), but to run it faster and faster. Thanks so much! Look forward to following through the next six months with you!

I admire your commitment to fitness and read your story on having a beautiful natural birth. Stopping by from SITS and look forward to your fitness and eating healthy posts. I can’t run as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis but I walk as fast as my legs will carry me. I need continued inspiration to help me keep exercising, it’s easy for me to find excuses why I can’t exercise but with my condition I really need to. Both to improve my joint mobility and to fight off depression from dealing with a chronic illness. New fan here from SITS, glad to have found you.

Thank you, Tanya! Walking is the perfect exercise. Probably much better for you in the long run than running, anyway.
And I’ve definitely found that exercise keeps depression at bay at well. Glad go have connected with you!
