34 weeks pregnant update

Happy Friday! Any fun plans for the weekend?

We’re hopping in the car for what should be the final trip before baby. I’m taking L to see grandparents for the weekend, and then leaving her for a few days to have one final mini “babymoon” next week.

We plan to stay home but head into NYC most days to catch a show (Wicked or Once, can’t decide!?), museums, the World Trade memorial, walk the city, get some good eats and do whatever else adults without children can do.

For today, I’m due for another update- 34 weeks today!

Here’s week 33’s picture from last week:

33 weeks pregnant

I’m feeling great this week.  After a week or two of cat napping almost daily, I found I didn’t need them this week. Workouts are slowing down a bit and I’m letting my body dictate what it wants to do.  I feel like I’m entering the month of tapering before the big event.

L and I got in an early morning stroller run this week when daddy was out of town.  It was just 4 miles but felt great to beat the heat and have it done bright and early!

33 weeks stroller run

Suddenly 34 weeks feels like we’re almost there.  Full term is just 3 weeks away, and these last few weeks are going to fly by!

What else is happening:

How far along: 34 weeks!

Total weight gain: up 15-16 lbs

Maternity clothes: I am living in dresses and comfy skirts.  Thankfully, it hasn’t been too hot yet but things are starting to warm up.

Sleep: Overall, I can’t complain. I rarely get up to pee, but I do flip from side to side about 358 times a night.  Most of the time, I fall right back to sleep.

Miss anything: Enjoying food.  I’m having more nausea than I did with L and nothing tastes all that great.

Movement: The moves and kicks are getting stronger. I still love watching my belly move from the outside.  🙂

Food cravings: Still wanting ice water and anything cold- smoothies, watermelon, oranges, berries.  Occasionally craving Annie’s mac and cheese or ice cream, so I’m just going with whatever tastes good.

Anything making you queasy or sick: I’m not especially queasy or sick, but food is becoming less appealing as my stomach is squished.

Have you started to show yet: Much bigger than I was with L! I get random comments all the time now, which is fun.

Happy or moody most of the time: Upbeat and happy, although I do find my patience wears out more quickly than usual with L.  Or maybe she’s sensing the upcoming changes and acting out more?

Looking forward to:  A NYC staycation next week!

We also had an ultrasound last week to check the growth of the baby as I consistently measure small (same thing happened with L).  Thankfully, everything looks great and the baby was measuring just over 4 pounds at 33 weeks.  If she/he gains the estimated 1/2 pound per week from here on, this baby will definitely be bigger than L (she was just 6 pounds). Apparently it’s common for the second child to be larger?

Also, thanks for the comments and input on my mental prep for labor- I didn’t have a chance to reply to everyone, but I really appreciated your words!

Moms, was your second child larger than your first?

Favorite thing to do in NYC (or without children?!)

  1. I was going to ask you about stroller running. We have been doing a lot of stroller runs and recently I ran in two races with my girls. What are your thoughts on running with a stroller? We have been using the BOB Duallie and I LOVE it! Anyway I would love to hear your input on it and if you plan on running with TWO.

Labor side-note – I found labor with my second to go much FASTER. I also felt more confident and strangely more at ease because I knew what to expect and what was happening to by body.

    • Hi Nikki,

So glad to hear labor went really well with #2, I agree that it will be helpful knowing what to expect this time!

As for stroller running, I’ve been eying the BOB Duallie and I would definitely get it if our kids were closer together, but since they’ll be about 4 years apart (and L has minimal interest in the stroller period these days) I don’t think we’re going to use it. My plan is to go early in the morning, or go mid-morning with just the baby while L is in preschool. But that’s awesome that you can use it and have been loving it!

  2. Have fun on the babymoon! I loved both Wicked and Once. Wicked is more of a spectacle but Once is also beautiful, and will probably close before Wicked if that’s a consideration.
Have you walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and taken the Staten Island Ferry (just for the ride and the view of the skyline and Statue of Liberty)? My two favorite free NYC things to do!

  3. We loved Wicked in NYC! You look beautiful as ever and I love that you’re calling this the “taper”! Haha! So true!
This reminds me this is the weekend I went into labor with Thing 1 13(!!!) years ago. We went to a strawberry fest and I walked a ton. She was born 2 weeks early so a tiny just under 6 pounder.
Thing 2 was almost 8 lbs but closer to her due date.

  4. Enjoy your babymoon. My second labor was super fast ( 3 hours compared to 12 the first time). Both my daughters were the same size when they were born. My third, a son, was a whole pound bigger, enormous head and the labor was 9 hours.

Best of luck for the rest of your pregnancy.

  5. I only have one child, but in the families I know, the oldest was almost always the smallest baby. I was born 13 years after my sister though, and was the smallest out of 4 of us.

Have a great time in the city this week! I haven’t seen Once, but Wicket is fantastic!! I only get to visit the city 1-2x/year, but always see a show, a museum (usually the Met if I’m alone), and get food I can’t get at home. An entire rice pudding store? Oh yes. 🙂

Gee, I thought reading your blog made me nostalgic for baby days… now it’s for NYC too. 😉

  6. So I have not seen once and I am sure it is great, but I saw wicked last winter when I was in town and it was AMAZING!!! So I have to say that is where my vote goes. When you had the recent ultrasound, you did not find out the sex? I remember how disappointed you were last time. I personally love it when people are surprised at birth!

    • Awesome- Wicked is what we decided on, too. I’m excited!! And to be honest, we did find out this time at the ultrasound, mostly so we could help prep L since she really wanted a brother and we couldn’t guarantee what she would get. 🙂 I was having a lot of fun with the surprise but couldn’t say no when they were asking and wanting to show us at hs u/s! But we’re not sharing until he/she is here!

  7. I’m glad to hear baby’s doing well! Everyone’s been saying I look so small, and sometimes those comments get to me. I’m eating and have gained weight, around the same as you have, and according to doc, measuring as I should be. Seeing another small mama makes me feel better, that baby girl will be just fine 🙂

    • Yes- your baby will be just fine! It bothered me the first time around, too. I was smaller with L than I am this time so it was easier this time to know it’s nothing to worry about. Everyone is different. My mom and sister and I all seem to gain just under 20 pounds and the baby is fine… your body does what it needs to do!

  8. How great that you get weekend in the city alone! Enjoy it and let us know what show you see. I’m sure L will enjoy grandparent time, too.

Yep, my daughter outweighed my son by about 3/4 of a lb!

  9. I only have 1 so I’m no help to you there!
I love love love going to NYC. My mom, sister, and I go every 2-3 years. We each pick a play/musical to see, go to a couple of tourist attraction, then just enjoy the city the rest of the time. We saw both Wicked and Once last year. My sister loved Wicked (me and mom not so much-but I think we are the only ones in the world who don’t love it). We LOVED Once-it’s a sweet love-ish type of story. I love the music, but I’m a big fan of the movie (which actually came first in this instance).
Your pregnancy sounds like it’s going great, you sure look good!
    Have fun this weekend!

    • Thanks, Monica! I loved the movie Once, too! Although our friend was getting us tickets (connections) and we’re going with Wicked this time. Hoping we get to catch Once at some point, too!

  10. Have so much fun on your baby moon. I think dinner and a show sounds fantastic. Must be so nice to be close to family. I am still in awe of your running- I would have to stop to pee 3-4 times for a 4 mile run. Is that not a problem for you during pregnancy? Have a great weekend!

  11. Have so much fun in NYC with your hubby! I’m sure it’s some much needed time for the two of you! You are super cute!!! And you are just glowing! My second weighed less than my first but that’s only because he was 3 weeks early. If he had gone full term like my first then he would have definitely been bigger!

  12. I’m so excited for you!!! You look great!! I’ve been reading your posts just haven’t commented, sorry!! Im impressed with your energy and ability to keep up with workouts this far into the third trimester, you inspire me 🙂 I haven’t officially posted on social media but I’m expecting as well, not due till December though so I just entered the 2nd trimester 🙂 Love reading your experience and getting your tips, thanks for sharing!!

  13. You do look lovely 🙂 I have read that the second tends to be bigger than the first, and that was very true of our second, though that baby was also a boy who was well over a week late.

I also measured small with both my kids, and that caused consternation in my British midwives (for no good reason: healthy babies born well over 8 pounds), so I’m glad to hear that you’re not letting that trouble you.

I was much happier with how my second labor went (short and more in control), so I will hope and pray that the same is true of you!

  14. See Wicked!! It’s so so good. I’ve seen it 4 times 🙂 i loved free tours by foot when I went to NYC. The tour of the high line area was especially good. And eat at The Meatball Shop. Delicious!

  15. Even though I know how pregnancy works and the weeks just keep going by, how in the world did you get to be 34 weeks already!! I guess I’m 28 weeks today so it makes sense, it really does, but it’s going too fast. I’m not ready for my due date!

    • Isn’t it crazy? I feel like everyone else’s pregnancies are flying by too.. and now mine is suddenly going really quickly. I’m excited for you! And I’m sure you’ll be ready as you get closer. 🙂

  16. So cool that you are going to NYC – have a great time.
My 2nd son was smaller but that’s because he was 6 weeks early – even at 6 weeks early he weight 5 pound 9 oz!!!

  17. My first was almost 2 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 6 oz. My second was six days overdue and weighed 8 lbs 12 oz. Big difference! I was a 10-lb baby so I think my second one got my genes 🙂

Enjoy your trip; sounds amazing! You look great!

  19. we did our babymoon with #2 in nyc too! mostly we visited friends, ran in central park, dined out (did a vegetarian kaiseki which was great for being pregnant – at kujitsu, if you were interested), and walked around.

also, my second baby was smaller than my first, but that is because she was growth restricted. I have a feeling she would have been bigger if that wasn’t the case.

enjoy the last few weeks! they will fly
